Harry - Our design winner!
From Sketch to Can: How Harry Mabb’s Artwork Became the Face of Crazy Daze
At Mad Squirrel, we’ve always believed that craft beer is about more than just what’s inside the can — it’s also about creativity, community, and bold self-expression. That’s why, as part of last year’s Upfest Art Festival at Ashridge House, we launched the Can Do Art competition: an open call for artists and designers of all ages to create a label for a Mad Squirrel beer.
We were overwhelmed by the response. The entries were imaginative, diverse, and full of personality — just like the beers we brew. But one design stood out from the rest.
🎉 Meet the winner: Harry Mabb
Harry’s entry, originally titled Mosaic, was a bold, geometric design that immediately caught our eye. It struck the perfect balance between structure and vibrancy — a visual interpretation of flavour and energy that felt right at home in the world of craft beer.
We’re proud to say that Harry’s design is now the official artwork for our latest release, Crazy Daze, and it looks absolutely stunning on the can.
A Bit About Harry
Harry is a third-year Graphic and Communication Design student at the University of Leeds, currently on placement at a Leeds-based design studio. When we caught up with him, he told us:
“My friend sent me the competition, knowing I’m a massive Mad Squirrel fan. For me, it was a no-brainer — but I never thought I’d actually win!”
The Design Process
Harry shared how he approached the brief:
“I’m drawn to the structure and rhythm of geometric patterns — they’ve become a key part of my illustration style. For this can design, I started by imagining what the beer’s flavour might look like if it had a shape, a texture, a pattern. I wanted the design to feel bold and punchy, something that reflects the vibrant personality at the heart of craft beer culture.”
What’s Next for Harry?
“I’d love to work in a fast-paced creative environment on a range of briefs — and also build up my illustration portfolio with more commissions. This project has been a great way to gain hands-on experience with a real-world design challenge.”
We’re thrilled to have helped give a platform to emerging talent like Harry, and even more thrilled to see his work become a part of the Mad Squirrel story.
Crazy Daze is available now — and thanks to Harry, it looks just as good as it tastes.
Cheers to creativity, collaboration, and crazy good beer. 🍻
